The Gospel is the greatest story ever told. When we care about others, we share great things that happen to us that might also help them. Jesus loves them just as Jesus loves us.
Sharing this great story with others also is an important part of our life as disciples. We are called to share our feelings and our love for Jesus, as well.
Here are other reasons we need to spread the Word of God:
- It is a Command From Jesus
- God Wants Everyone to be Saved
- Sharing With Others Helps to Increase Our Own Faith
- We Strive to Love Others
It is a Command From Jesus
Jesus's last commandment to all those gathered at His ascension was to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." With this commandment, found in Matthew 28, Jesus invited us to tell others about His life as written in Scripture, but also about how Jesus lives within us and with us now.
Jesus also had sent the disciples out into the world before his death to prepare and form them for their role after his death and ascension. He sent them out two by two to spread the Gospel, bringing healing of mind, body, and spirit to those who received it. (Mark 6: 7-13.) Jesus wants us to share the Gospel with others to bring healing and peace to them, as well.
God Wants Everyone to be Saved
God loves us more than we can imagine, and God created us to be in God's image and fellowship with Him. Humanity, however, breaks God's commandments and, in breaking those commandments, injures their relationship with God. God sent Jesus to provide an example for living in a relationship with God, to die to restore that relationship for all who believe in Him and to help us live more like God. Through Jesus, we have an abiding relationship with God while we are on earth and are guaranteed an eternal place with God in heaven after we die.
John 3:16 explains this well. It reads, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
Scripture also tells us that our loving God wants everyone to believe. 1 Timothy 2:4 says that God our Savior wants everyone to be saved "and to come to the knowledge of the truth." Our testimony of how God has been good to us, how Jesus died for us, and how the Holy Spirit continues to transform us is critical to helping others learn about Jesus and believe in Him. When others hear us describe the changes in our lives, they will be receptive to Jesus changing their lives, too.
Sharing With Others Helps to Increase Our Own Faith
Talking about anything -- whether a passage in a book or a life experience -- often improves our own understanding. For example, suppose we meet the love of our life. As we describe that person's good traits and characteristics to our friends, we grow in understanding them and loving them. Likewise, a passage in a favorite novel often comes more alive when we read it aloud to friends or family and discuss it.
The phenomenon also occurs when we share God's Word. When we read Scripture to our friends and talk about it, the passage becomes more alive for us. When we talk about the characteristics of Jesus, the Living Word of God, we understand them better and learn to love them more.
We also share God's love through actions such as helping others and meeting their needs. We may comfort a friend who is grieving a loss or provide food to someone who has lost their job. This sharing also helps our love for God to grow, too. We see God at work in us and the world, and our faith increases.
We Strive to Love Others
In John 15:12, Jesus commanded us to love each other as Jesus has loved us. While we can never match the perfect, unconditional love that Jesus has for us, we are called to strive to do so continually. We pray for our friends, family, enemies, and for those we don't even know. We give of our time, talents, and resources to help those in need. We genuinely want other people to have a fulfilling life and do whatever we can to help bring about that love.
Jesus is the key to a fulfilling life. Jesus comforts those who grieve or are in other types of physical or emotional pain. He rejoices with those who are happy. Through Jesus, humanity stays in a continual relationship with the Creator God, and that relationship satisfies our human longing for love and completeness.
When we truly love others, we will share with them our love for God and His love for us. We will share about Jesus because we want those we love to have the same relationship with God. We want them to have the most fulfilling and complete life possible.
To Sum Up
Sharing God's Word is important for these reasons
- Jesus's last words to his followers on earth included a commandment that we go everywhere preaching the Gospel and teaching others about God's Word.
- Hearing and believing God's word is important for salvation, which means having our sins forgiven, our relationship with God restored, and a promise of eternal life with Jesus. God wants everyone to hear the Word and be saved, and we have a part in spreading that word.
- As we articulate God's Word as expressed in Scripture and our lives, we grow in our own understanding of it. As our understanding increases, our faith increases.
- We share our faith because we love others and want them to know about the greatest story ever told.
